CSG – Learning at Work Week

21 May 2021 by CSG

At CSG there is a strong consensus that our employees are our greatest asset and the importance of CSG’s people culture is driven by a Board that truly believe in it. To us taking care of, supporting and investing in our employees is as obvious as the sky is blue.

Read some of our many success stories of employees that have learnt at work!

Niamh Harrison – Business Sales Co-Ordinator, CSG Recovery, Prescot

Before working for CSG Recovery I had been at college and was offered a place at university, but I decided that wasn’t the right path for me and that an apprenticeship was the best option.

I joined the company in 2019 as an apprentice and the company has supported me through my Level 2 and Level 3 Business Administration qualifications. The courses have been very relevant to my job and helped me to progress into taking on more responsibility. Now I help to co-ordinate work across various departments such as technical, sales and transport. We work as a team and it is very satisfying to contribute to the team success.

I had never researched the waste industry, but now I would definitely recommend it to other people. Every day is a challenge and there are lots of opportunities for career progression. I am able to take a lot of pride in my job – the work we do at CSG Recovery make a real difference in helping to protect the environment and natural resources.

Ben Robb – Driver, CSG Aylesford

Even though I had done lots of driving jobs before, I always wanted to be a Class 2 driver, so it was brilliant to get the chance to train with CSG. The company really looks after people and invests in training to get the best out of you. Driver training is very expensive to pay for yourself, so I am grateful for this opportunity with CSG.

Of all my jobs, this is by far the best. We have a brilliant team at the Aylesford depot and I get lots of help and support from my manager and the rest of the team.

I joined the company just before the Covid pandemic hit, but our job is an essential service, so we carried on working as normal. I do domestic waste collections, visiting customers and emptying their septic tanks. It’s a great job, getting out and meeting people – and we usually get offered a cup of tea from our regular customers too!

Albert Fowler – Sales Executive, CSG Fareham

I joined CSG in 2018 knowing very little about the waste industry. My ambition had been to serve in the Army, but a medical discharge forced me to look for a completely different career and I am so lucky to have secured this role. I look after customer service calls, booking in septic tank servicing appointments so my job requires me to communicate clearly and professionally. The training I have had while at CSG has helped me not only do my job better but also developed me as a person. I am aware that my communication and negotiation skills have improved and I have found myself using many of the techniques I’ve learned at work in the outside world too.

I have completed the Business Administration level 2 and Customer Service Practitioner level 3 qualifications and intend to continue taking up all training and development that is available to me. That’s one of the great things about CSG – they will always support you to be the very best you can be. I feel 100 per cent fortunate to have discovered this industry and be able to start on a long-term career with CSG.

Patrick Tamsett – Transfer Station Manager, CSG Aylesford

When I joined CSG in 2008 I was already qualified to HNC level, and it became clear my career progression would require me to complete a degree. The company supported me to achieve a first-class BSc in Chemistry at the University of Greenwich.

I am responsible for the safe collection, storage, processing and disposal of hazardous materials. We receive and process a wide range of hazardous materials, so it is imperative I have the depth of understanding gained from my degree, to ensure the highest levels of safety.

CSG gave me the opportunity to move up to this more senior role and all the training and access to higher education that I needed. The senior management create a really positive environment and a high level of motivation. The company is very supportive of ambitious staff and is always willing to invest in people.
