Who are they?
Covering 95 miles of the River Thames, the Port of London Authority (PLA) works to keep commercial and leisure users safe, protect and enhance the environment, and promote the use of the river for trade and travel.
CSG provides regular scheduled ‘black water’ collection from Denton Wharf and emergency spill response services to the PLA, ensuring the safe and sanitary disposal of sewage and ensuring any accidental pollution incidents can be addressed rapidly and professionally.
What did we do for them?
When a barge sank on the Thames, the resulting oil spill from the vessel threatened potentially catastrophic results for the health of the river.
PLA Marine Services Manager Jim Denby was first on site at the emergency and – recognising the severity of the incident – called in CSG to lead on the clean-up operation.
Arriving within the hour, CSG’s rapid response spills management team quickly assessed the situation and, having the benefit of specialist vehicles, were able to begin dealing with the oil contamination immediately.
Our vehicles carry on-board spill kits, absorbents and specialist equipment to contain and clean up the spill to prevent contamination of the environment. Two pumping vehicles attended on the day, with numerous follow-up visit days later to complete the clean-up and to monitor, attending throughout January and February.
In total, more than 60 tonnes of contaminated water were removed from the site by CSG’s tankers and the polluted water was sent to CSG’s specialised oil treatment plant and transfer station for processing. The company’s facilities enable the recycling of oily waste, ensuring only treated water is allowed back into the main drains while the recovered oil is diverted to industrial reuse.

Jim Denby said: “Thankfully, spills of this type are very rare, but it is reassuring to know we have a trusted supplier capable of dealing with the incident quickly and professionally as time really is of the essence in these cases to minimise the impact on the river. A full internal review of our spills response operation demonstrates how fortunate we are to have CSG’s specialists on hand to support us in emergency situations.”
