County Council Approve New Waste Transfer Site

Kent County Council has approved the development of a hazardous waste transfer station on the Quarry Wood Industrial Estate in Aylesford.

Being developed by award-winning waste management specialist Cleansing Service Group (CSG), the approval enables the site to become a state-of-the-art waste treatment, recovery and transfer facility able to accept a variety of hazardous and non-hazardous waste types from a wide range of public and private sector industrial and commercial organisations.

Waste delivered to the site will be will be assessed and treated there, or made ready for onward transportation to other sites for treatment or disposal. The wastes will be handled using Best Available Techniques (BAT) and in compliance with the latest Health & Safety and Environment Agency regulations and guidance. The site will operate under a Pollution Prevention & Control (PPC) licence and this has been applied for.

Hampshire-based CSG say the site will fulfil the need for a waste transfer station in the South-East which also has the capability, capacity and expertise to deal with hazardous waste streams. Currently these have to be transported to other areas of the UK.

“This is a more environmentally sustainable way of handling the waste because, after being dealt with on site as determined by the assessment, it can be bulked and transported on larger vehicles thereby reducing the number of lorries using local roads. It also helps to reduce our carbon footprint,” said CSG managing director Neil Richards.

Building work to convert the CSG-owned site from a transport yard to a specialised waste handling facility has commenced and it is expected to open for business at the end of April this year. The oil/water treatment plant that currently occupies part of the site will remain in operation.

CSG already operate a nationwide network of specialist treatment facilities as well as what is believed to be the UK’s largest hazardous waste treatment and recovery facility at Cadishead, Manchester.

The company’s on-going investment in the research and development of new waste handling technologies has made it widely recognised as a test bed for new and advanced recovery methods.

CSG, which is one of the UK waste industry’s fastest growing companies, is a leading provider of Total Waste Management (TWM) services, helping many of its customers to maximise recycling opportunities, reduce the volume of waste going to landfill and, in many instances, save money.
