CSG Sponsors Festival of Chemistry

Leading waste managers Cleansing Service Group (CSG) was a sponsor of the Salters’ Festival of Chemistry held at the University of Manchester.

The three day event involved some 240 pupils from 60 schools around the North West with each school represented by a team of four 11 – 13 year olds.

Each morning the teams took part in a competitive, hands-on, practical activity and in the afternoon they competed in the ‘University Challenge’, a practical activity chosen by the University. This was followed by a ‘Flash-Bang’ lecture and prize giving.

CSG chemist Dr. Stuart Atkinson was on the panel of four judges who chose the winning teams to be awarded prizes for their schools.

The Salters’ Festivals are an initiative of the Salters’ Institute which aims to promote an appreciation of chemistry and relates sciences among the young. Over the last 15 years over 44,000 students have experienced the fun of practical chemistry.

The Salters’ Company was first licensed in 1394 and is one of the Great 12 Livery Companies. Today the Company is a diverse organisation responsible for several charitable foundations and philanthropic work in science education.

CSG has two laboratories each with a team of Chemists working on checking the constituents of a wide range of industrial wastes, as well as evaluating new procedures and processes aimed at improving waste recycling rates.
